Fixing Clunking Sounds on Your Electric Bike Over Bumpy Terrain

If you hear a clunking noise while riding your electric bike over rough or uneven terrain, it’s usually caused by one of two common issues. Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix it:

1. Chain Hitting the Top Plastic Chain Guard

  • Cause: On bikes with a large sprocket, the chain may hit the top plastic chain guard while riding.

  • Solution: Remove or adjust the top chain guard. Doing so typically reduces or eliminates the clunking sound.

2. Rear Suspension Spring

  • Cause: Loose or under-tensioned rear suspension spring can allow more movement, creating clunking noises.

  • Solution: Tighten the rear spring to provide more support and reduce unwanted noise.

By addressing these two areas, most clunking noises on bumpy terrain can be resolved, improving both ride comfort and overall performance.
