General Maintenance Guide for Electric Scooters

Proper maintenance is essential for keeping your electric scooter in top condition and ensuring safety and longevity. This guide covers key areas of routine maintenance, from battery care to lubrication.

1. Battery Health

Even with a Battery Management System (BMS), it’s important to support your battery’s longevity:

  • Ideal storage temperature: ~66°F (19°C).

  • Optimal charge range: Keep the battery between 30% and 80% charge.

  • Avoid: Complete discharge or a full 100% charge when not necessary.

  • Tip: While the BMS handles protections, proactive care helps maintain battery health over time.

2. Screw Tightening

Regular riding can loosen screws, so it’s important to check them occasionally:

  • Check primary areas like handlebars, stem, kickstand, and wheel assemblies.

  • Folding mechanisms may require special attention.

  • For screws you want to remain secure long-term, apply a small drop of blue Loctite to make them resistant to vibrations.

  • Screws with factory-applied Loctite typically do not need extra attention.

3. Battery Voltage Checks

Checking battery voltage helps assess overall battery health:

  • Use the scooter’s built-in voltmeter if available.

  • If not, use a multimeter:

    1. Power off the scooter completely.

    2. Disconnect the battery.

    3. Set the multimeter to the voltmeter setting and measure the voltage across the battery terminals.

    4. Compare with manufacturer voltage specifications to ensure proper battery health.

4. General Cleaning

  • Use soapy water and a rag to clean the scooter’s surfaces.

  • Be cautious around wire connections and battery compartments to avoid water damage.

5. Brake Caliper Cleaning

  • Brake calipers can be removed and cleaned with water.

  • Allow them to fully dry before reinstalling to prevent corrosion or brake issues.

6. Suspension and Folding Mechanism Lubrication

  • Lubricate if necessary to reduce friction and prevent squeaking.

  • Recommended lubricants:

    • 3M paste (preferred by technicians)

    • White lithium grease (premium alternative)

    • WD-40 (works but may cause squeaking)
