Roadrunner Brake Care & Replacement Guide

Step-by-step instructions for pads, calipers, cables, and rotors for the Roadrunner and Cruiser

Your scooter’s braking system is one of the most important parts of safe riding. Over time, pads, cables, calipers, or even the rotor may need replacement or adjustment. This guide will walk you through the basics, with video tutorials linked for extra help.

Replacing Brake Pads

🎥 Tutorial: Watch here

Removal:

  1. (Optional) Remove the brake from the tire for easier access.

  2. Bend the hook on your Xtech brake and pull out the pin.

  3. Use tweezers or pliers to slide out the brake pads.

  4. Remove the pads from the metal clip.

Installation:

  1. Align the new pad with the metal clip.

  2. Insert the brake pad and re-insert the pin.

  3. Bend the hook to secure the pad.

Replacing Brake Calipers

🎥 Tutorial: Watch here

  1. Loosen the barrel adjuster screw to release the brake line.

  2. Unscrew the caliper’s mounting bracket screws.

  3. Remove the caliper (don’t lose the small spring on the inner brake cable).

  4. Thread the brake cable through the new caliper, replacing the spring as before.

  5. Reattach the caliper with the mounting screws.

  6. Tighten the barrel adjuster screw to secure the cable.

  7. (Optional) Replace the cosmetic metal cap at the end of the cable.

Replacing Brake Cables

🎥 Tutorial: Watch here

(This demo uses a Cruiser, but the Roadrunner process is nearly identical—just different cable lengths.)

  1. Remove the front U-deck and left rear turn signal.

  2. Unscrew the top bolt on the left rear suspension to move it aside.

  3. Pull the old brake cable out.

  4. Feed the new cable in through the top left side of the deck.

  5. Run it toward the rear of the scooter, leaving enough slack.

  6. Route the cable up through the stem and out at the upper stem base.

  7. Attach the small cylinder piece of the cable to the brake lever.

  8. Reassemble the deck, turn signal, and suspension.

  9. Run the cable through the calipers and adjust for feel.

  10. Tidy up with covers or zip ties.

Replacing the Rotor

🎥 Tutorial: Watch here (2:20–2:28)

  1. Remove the motor/rear wheel.

  2. Unscrew all six rotor screws.

  3. Remove the rotor.

  4. Place the new rotor with the arrow facing the direction of wheel spin.

  5. Line up holes and re-install the six screws.

Brake Tuning and Adjustments

🎥 Tutorials:

  • Brake Tuning & Maintenance

  • How to Tune Brakes

  • Wheel catching pads / not spinning freely: Loosen caliper mounting screws, reposition until free spin is achieved, then retighten.

  • Wheel spins even when braking: Tighten brake cable with the barrel adjuster.

  • Brakes engage but wheel still moves with force: Adjust the black screw on the caliper (or at the lever) to increase brake sensitivity.

  • Wobbly rotor: Usually caused by a bent rotor or loose screws—inspect and replace if necessary.

  • Squeaky brakes: Normal over time; clean pads and rotor with soapy water.

❌ Do not use WD-40 when cleaning the rotor or brakes

✅ With proper maintenance, your brakes will stay strong, reliable, and responsive.
